BMI (Body Mass Index) is a number calculated from your weight and height. It provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories.
How is BMI calculated?▼
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m tall: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86.
What is normal BMI for Indians?▼
The WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines use lower cutoffs for Asians: Normal is 18.5–22.9, Overweight is 23–24.9, and Obese is 25+. This is because Asians have higher health risks at lower BMI values.
Is BMI accurate for muscular people?▼
BMI may overestimate body fat in athletes and muscular individuals. It's a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. Consider waist-to-hip ratio or body fat percentage for more accuracy.
