What is a good readability score?▼
For general web content, aim for Flesch Reading Ease of 60-70 (8th-9th grade level). Blog posts work best at 7th-8th grade. Academic papers can be lower.
What is Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?▼
It estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text. A score of 8.0 means an 8th grader can read it. Most popular content scores 6-8.
What counts as a complex word?▼
A word with 3 or more syllables is considered complex (used in Gunning Fog). Fewer complex words = easier to read.
How can I improve readability?▼
Use shorter sentences, simpler words, active voice, and break long paragraphs. Aim for 15-20 words per sentence on average.
